No. 20 Kentucky women’s soccer (8–1–1, 0–1–1 SEC) fell to the South Carolina Gamecocks (5–0–4, 2–0 SEC) 1-0 on Sunday, with the result serving as the team’s first loss all season.
The first half started off slow as both teams struggled to gain momentum offensively. There were a total of five fouls, four on South Carolina and one on Kentucky, while the Wildcats had six shots on goal and the Gamecocks had three.
Even with the amount of fouls and shots on goal, both teams failed to follow through and hit the back of the net.
Then, in the first 22 minutes of the second half, the Wildcats racked up three additional fouls, all of which the Gamecocks failed to capitalize on.
This trend would not continue in the 71st minute as Kentucky added an additional foul to its total, which gave South Carolina a corner kick.
From there, in the 74th minute, after a foul following the corner, South Carolina’s freshman forward Katie Shea Collins was able to hit the back of the net for the first and only time of the night off of a penalty kick.
Kentucky struggled to fight back as it only had two other goal attempts in the 86th and 88th minutes, allowing the Gamecocks to hand the Wildcats their first loss all season with the final score at 1–0.
The Wildcats will look to get back to winning ways as they face the Georgia Bulldogs at home on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m. ET. The contest will air live on the SEC Network+.
