In a media briefing held by Kentucky State Police, the suspect in the Interstate 75 shooting, is presumed dead after a body was found in a wooded area near exit-49.
I-75, in Laurel County, was shut down on Saturday, Sept. 7, after suspect Joseph Couch shot five people driving on the highway, according to officials.
Fred and Sheila McCoy of the Hatfield McCoy Museum Adventures YouTube channel, and Kentucky State Troopers “stumbled upon” a body on Sept. 18, according to the Commissioner of State Police, Phillip Burnett Jr.
“There were articles associated with the body that at this time we feel is Joseph Couch,” Burnett Jr. said.
The scene is still being processed according to Burnett.
The McCoy’s search for Couch began as a “date night” on Friday, according to Fred. He said they began to notice the growing number of vultures throughout the weekend.
“If somebody’s dead, there’s going to be the vultures,” Fred said. “Follow the vultures.”
He said there were about 50 vultures over the scene which led to the couple narrowing their search.
“When we came down to the trees… a horrible smell of something dead, you could smell it, and I told him (Fred) ‘there’s something awful in here,’” Sheila said in a video from WLKY News Louisville.
The autopsy will be conducted in Frankfort, Kentucky tomorrow, Sept. 19, to identify the body and the cause of death.
“I hope that our county can get back to what’s normal,” Laurel County Sheriff John Root said.
