Once forgotten excitement helps introduce Stoops as head coach

Upon walking into UK’s Nutter Field House Sunday afternoon, one got the sense they were walking into a pep rally instead of a press conference. Fans and boosters assembled outside the field house clad in blue and white. The marching band blared the school’s fight song and other stadium anthems while cheerleaders hooted and hollered with a sense of excitement foreign to the program in recent years.

Stoops hire brings intrigue to vacant offensive coordinator position

With the hiring of Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops to be UK’s new head football coach, it is the dawn of a new era in the Bluegrass. Stoops, a defensive-minded coach, will have an opportunity to implement his schemes into the defensively-predicated SEC in his first career head coaching gig. But it is who Stoops chooses to bring on as his offensive coordinator that should have fans sitting on the edge of their seats.

On an emotional day for the entire football program, UK defeated Samford 34-3. It was the Cats’ first win since September 8, their first home game of the year. In its final home game of 2012, UK gave its senior class and departing head coach a reason to celebrate.

Weeks of holdout came to an abrupt end Sunday when UK athletic director Mitch Barnhart made it known by letter that head coach Joker Phillips is no longer an employee of the university.
