The UK community has lost a member some refer to as a true Renaissance man.

James Kuder served as the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs from 1987 until his retirement in 2002.

Circumstances of his death were unknown as of press time.  Student Center Director John Herbst had just heard the news

Thursday morning and said the loss “knocked the breath” out of him.

“(Kuder) was an absolutely remarkable individual,” Herbst said. “He had just an incredible love for students and was always looking out for their rights and privileges.”

Herbst worked with Kuder for the entirety of his career at UK and called him “a pillar of the profession.” Herbst said Kuder leaves behind a lasting impression on the UK community.

“He was such an astute administrator and advocate for students,” Herbst said. “I think that will be his legacy.”

Along with being a great boss, Herbst said Kuder turned out to be a great friend over the years.

“He had the ability to laugh about himself and laugh at situations,” Herbst said.

Although hesitant to use a cliche, Herbst said Kuder’s diverse interests  helped him  fit the definition of a well-rounded Renaissance man.

“In addition to his research and academic work, he was an exceptionally talented cook,” Herbst said. “He was a connoisseur of food and a lover of music.”

Kuder is survived by Linda Brasfield Kuder and their family.
