Down-home dessert a slice of Kentucky culture

Even for those who don’t like watching the horses race, the Kentucky Derby brings something special: Derby Pie.

Derby Pie, which is filled with a mixture of chocolate chips and pecan pieces, is a Derby staple, joining the mint julep as traditional fare for the event. At Missy’s Pie Shop on Woodland Avenue, the big seller this weekend will be MayDay Pie (Derby Pie is a trademarked term by Kern’s Kitchen in Louisville, so the shop can’t use it). Manager Barb Pollitt said during Derby weekend, the shop usually sells 200 pies, more than quadruple the amount of all the other pies they sell combined.

Pollitt said the dessert has a place in Kentucky culture.

“It’s a long Kentucky tradition, and you really can’t get it anywhere else,” Pollitt said.
