Ray of sunshine: Places to spend time in the sun on campus
April 17, 2023
Students have been starting to spend more time outside as the weather slowly gets warmer, but it can be difficult to find a nice spot to do homework.
I’ve compiled a list of my favorite places to study, sit and enjoy the weather on or near campus. Try these spots out so you can get your vitamin D fix as the sun starts to come out.
Gatton Student Center has multiple spots to spend time outside.
The roof and the ground floor courtyard both have plenty of seating, both in the shade and in the sun.
The student center Starbucks has an enclosed area with seating near the front with the doors often being left open.
This is a great place to go if you want the fresh air without the sunburn on the super sunny days.
If you’re closer to the central side of campus, the William T. Young has a good amount of seating to enjoy your coffee or Chick-fil-A outdoors.
The balcony of “Willy T.” and outside of Starbucks have some tables and chairs, though they are usually a bit crowded on nice days.
If all of these places are full but you still want some sunshine, grab a towel or a blanket and go sit in the grass around Willy T. or behind the Flats.
Less than a mile from Kroger Field, the Arboretum State Botanical Garden is a great place to walk around or take a blanket to lay amongst the flowers and enjoy the weather.
If you’re hoping to get some exercise with the warmth, beach volleyball courts sit on both north and central campus.
One court is situated behind the University Flats while the other is by Blazer Hall.
For the basketball players, there are a few basketball courts that you can use.
One is in the courtyard of the Woodland Glens and the other is near the Johnson Center behind the tennis courts, also for student use.
There are hammock stands all around campus. You can find them behind the Flats, in front of Whitehall, Gatton Student Center and by Willy T.
Sunshine and fresh air is vital for having good mental health, so I urge you to take advantage of these spaces and the warming temperatures to get outside and study.
