Sydney Cassady, a 22-year-old senior at UK, has been identified as the victim in a car crash that occurred Monday night in Georgetown, according to WKYT.
The article said the crash happened around 5 p.m. when Cassady turned off of Seminole Trail at McClelland Circle and was struck by a pickup truck. Police say early indications suggest Cassady failed to yield to oncoming traffic, according to WTVQ.
The truck’s driver, 52, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, WKYT reports.
WTVQ says Cassady was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Georgetown Police Department Facebook post made Monday night said that the area was closed “due to a serious collision” but has since reopened.
The sheriff’s office says they are investigating the crash as an accident and don’t suspect drugs or alcohol were involved, according to WKYT.
UK spokesperson Jay Blanton said the university wants to respect the privacy of the family and others, “but generally when a tragedy occurs on our campus involving one of our students, we reach out to the family and we also reach out to classmates or people who know a student well and offer resources and support, such as counseling and other services.”
Cassady was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, according to her Instagram account. She majored in foreign languages and international economics/Spanish in the College of Arts & Sciences, according to the UK officials.
Cassady was from Rockfield, Kentucky, according to WKYT. She graduated from South Warren High School in Bowling Green in 2019, according to her Instagram.
