With first iTunes release, Ellery has raw sound

Ellery is two people, both madly in love with two things — their music and each other.

The duo, which began in 2005, consists of husband and wife, Justin and Tasha Golden. Ellery hails from Cincinnati, and while they are yet to be signed to a major label or see any significant airplay, they are slowly building up their status in the world of indie music through extensive, nationwide touring.

The band’s sound feels as though Sarah McLachlan was injected with an up-beat dose of pop sensibility. While Justin Golden supplies the folky and unforgettable chord progressions to their songs, it is Tasha Golden that separates Ellery from their peers. Her voice is timid and powerful all in the same moment, giving the group a very warm, full sound.

While the band has had only one full-length studio release, “Lying Awake” in 2006, this January saw their new EP’s release on iTunes.

“You Did Everything Right” features five new songs from the duo, each of which continues Ellery’s signature trend sonically. Each song contains some combination of acoustic guitar, piano, drums and a Wurlitzer.

It seems that Ellery finally played to its strengths — Tasha’s vocals — and it succeeds with flying colors. Each song feels as though her voice is front and center and the instrumentation is built around that core. “Lay Your Head Down” is a perfect example of this concept as the guitar is an exact mirror of Tasha’s vocal melody, and the only thing keeping time is the sound of an old, ticking metronome.

The very raw sound of Ellery may have been forged in the pits of folk and indie music, but if Ellery continues their inclination for writing elegant pop songs, the confines of their genre won’t be able to hold them very much longer.
