Quick recap: Cats use double-digit run to defeat Gators 74-71
March 12, 2012
Key player: The sluggish start from freshman Anthony Davis didn’t find its way to New Orleans Arena on Saturday. From start to finish, Davis’ impact was felt on the game. In the first half when Florida continued to stretch out its lead, it was Davis that had the ball in his hands for a momentum-killing basket either by his own creation or on a lob to sophomore Terrence Jones. In the end, Davis would finish with his 16th double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and snagging 12 rebounds.
Turning point/key stretch: The amount of time that the Cats held the lead in the game was minimum. Their first lead came on a Anthony Davis 3-pointer just before the buzzer in the first half. Two more short leads at the beginning of the second half would be overcome by a barrage of Gators 3-pointers. The Cats overcame their struggles to obtain the lead for good when a pair of Terrence Jones free throws started a 14-0 run with 10:21 remaining in the game. By the end of that run the Cats would lead 65-56 before the Gators would attempt to fight their way back.
The good: Despite having the biggest matchup advantages, UK was able to win the game without having big performances from freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist or senior Darius Miller. While he did end the game with 10 points and 8 rebounds, Kidd-Gilchrist’s scoring total amounted to the combined total for the duo.
Stat of the game: UK out-rebounded Florida 39-25. Much of the difference came on the offensive end where the Cats’ 16 offensive boards were nine more than what the Gators could pull down due to UK’s length. The rebounding margin was the biggest difference among the three meetings between the teams.
What’s next: Following their 74-71 victory in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament, UK will await the winner of Vanderbilt and Ole Miss to see who it will face in the SEC Tournament finals on Sunday at 1 p.m. EST on ABC.
