December 13, 2013
They made it through two episodes on season 4 of NBC’s “The Sing Off,” after facing elimination in the Ultimate Sing Off against latin inspired group Calle Sol, and tonight Lexington’s acoUstiKats returned to defend their spot on the show on Thursday night.
Tonight only four groups are singing to compete: Ten, Street Corner Renaissance, acoUstiKats and The Filharmonics, but one group will be eliminated.
Tonight’s challenge is “Favorite hits.”
Kicking off tonight’s performances is Ten performing “Chain of Fools” by soul artist Aretha Franklin.
The group began the song of in a slow steady rhythm, but quickly heightened the intensity of the song like Franklin.
“Here’s the thing that sucked about that performance.” said judge Shawn Stockman of the R&B vocal group Boyz II Men. “It wasn’t long enough.”
The group received rave reviews from judges Ben Folds and Jewel.
Next up, to take the stage was Lexington’s acoUstiKats singing “Amazed” by Lonestar.
The group was advised by Stockman to pick a girl in the audience to sing to.
The group received positive feedback from all three judges. Jewel, the only female judge, said she felt special after the guys’ performance.
After hearing the judges’ feedback, one of the base singers from the group proposed to his girlfriend on stage.
There might be an acoUstiKats wedding in the future.
Singing up-beat, doo-wop style song “Forget You” by Cee Lo Green was Street Corner Renaissance.
Ford enjoyed the bass in the song. Jewel said the Motown style of the song was perfect for the group.
Performing “One More Night” by Maroon 5 was The Filharmonics.
The group kept the reggae style of the original song, but took Stockman’s advice to make it edgier with a heavier base.
The group was a crowd favorite with their performance, but Ford said he was looking for a tighter performance from the group, which resulted in a series of “boos” from the audience.
During the commercial breaks, the judges decided who will advance and who will compete to stay in the competition.
Street Corner Renaissance and The Filharmonics were chosen to compete in the Ultimate Sing Off.
Ten and the acoUstiKats are safe to compete in the next episode of NBC’s “The Sing Off.”
After the Ultimate Sing Off, the judges chose to save The Filharmonics and Street Corner Renaissance was sent home.
