For National Public Health Week, Vanessa Oliver, a dietitian with the UK Health and Wellness program, spoke with a group, sharing tips for going to a Farmer’s Market.
On Saturday, the Fifth Third Pavilion Farmer’s Market had its big spring kick-off event. The market is open every Saturday year-round, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Farmer’s have worked very hard to grow, pick, and offer the goods to the customers,” Oliver said.
,Oliver previously worked for a local farm in Scott County as a vendor for 10 years. Her main goal is to promote the Market due to the health factor and fresh food.
During the class, Mrs. Oliver was able to reach out and state need-to-know tips before going to the market. She said that customers must know what is available, keep dialogue with the vendors, invest in a cart for the produce, and be aware of their surroundings.
Oliver added that market-goers should be aware that not all goods are created equal, as far as health and wellness is concerned.
“Just because you but a chocolate-chip scone at the market, (that) does not make it healthy,” Oliver said.
