UK to test alert system at noon Thursday
September 24, 2015
STAFF REPORT
The UK Police Department’s Crisis Management and Preparedness office plans to test the UK Alert system 12 p.m. Thursday according to a campus-wide email.
The email said the notification would be sent to devices registered with UK Alerts by phone calls, text messages and emails, as well as social media.
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to register their devices for UK Alerts through the myUK portal.
The email said safety is UK’s top priority and millions of dollars have been invested to improve the welfare of the campus community.
According to the UK Police Division of Crisis Management and Preparedness website, the campus-wide alerts communicate official information during emergencies that have the potential to disrupt normal campus operations or the health and safety of the campus community.
UK alerts are only issued when immediate action is required by the recipient, according to the website.
UK alerts are normally relayed via text message, social media, local media, phone calls, emails and loudspeakers on campus to notify people of threatening situations which can include active shooters, gas leaks and inclement weather to alert people that they should seek shelter immediately.
