Saturday’s Y’Art Sale will raise money for Fine Arts museum
September 22, 2017
The first annual Y’Art Sale starts this Saturday, Sept. 23 at 8 a.m. on UK’s campus and around Lexington.
The Y’Art Sale is an outdoor event, much like a yard sale where local artists will be selling art and other various items, including those one could find at a regular yard sale. There will be everything from art to vintage clothing to small appliances, according to the UK Fine Arts Museum.
Admission to the Y’Art Sale is free.
Y’Art Sale vendors were asked to donate 30 percent of their sales to benefit the UK Fine Arts Museum. Participants are local artists and collectors chosen by the UK Art Museum.
“Participants were chosen based on their relationship with the museum and the thinking that they might, being artists and collectors, have yard sale items that are more interesting than the typical yard sale,” Kate Sprengnether, the Operations and Events Manager at the UK Art Museum, said.
Y’Art Sale began from a need to diversify and increase fundraising for the Art Museum.
“The old fundraising model, throwing a big, exclusive party with a high-ticket price, is not as successful as it once was,” Sprengnether said.
Sprengnether said she hopes the sale will broaden the museum’s reach to people in the UK area and the greater Lexington communities who may not have heard of them before. It is a unique and innovative way to raise money on the Art Museum’s behalf, which is a non-profit organization.
There will be 16 Y’Art Sales at the UK Fine Arts Museum and in various participant’s homes and businesses. A list of participants and the locations of their Y’ART Sales can be found here.
Students can get involved in this event by shopping at the sales. UK students, employees and members of the Lexington community are encouraged to attend the sales to benefit the Art Museum.
To get involved in the Fine Arts Museum, students can become a member for $10 monthly. The Fine Arts Museum will also be a stop on the Student Activities Board’s Art Walk on Friday, September 22.
