Quarterback Cam Newton was wrong to laugh at female sports journalist’s question
October 9, 2017
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is under major scrutiny after making a degrading and sexist comment to a Charlotte Observer female beat reporter Jourdan Rodrigue during a press conference on Wednesday night.
Rodrigue asked Newton a question regarding Panthers’ wide receiver Devin Funchess and the physicality that he uses when running his routes during games. Rodrigue asked if Newton got enjoyment out of that to which Newton responded with a comment that shocked not only Rodrigue but the world.
“It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes like – it’s funny,” Newton said.
Yes, you read that right.
Rodrigue later took to Twitter after the press conference had concluded and sent out a tweet that stated, “I don’t think it’s “funny” to be a female and talk about routes. I think it’s my job.”
I don’t think it’s “funny” to be a female and talk about routes. I think it’s my job.

Rodrigue went and found Newton after the press conference and Newton did not apologize to her for the sexist and degrading comment that he had made to her.
Newton lost an endorsement because of the comment that he can never take back. Dannon, whom had an endorsement deal with the quarterback through Oikos Yogurt, dissolved its deal with Newton. And honestly, it is what he deserves.
I spoke with him after and it was worse. I chose not to share, because I have an actual job to do today and one he will not keep me from.

Newton did not even apologize for what he did until a day and a half later, and after he lost his endorsement deal with Dannon. Isn’t that ironic?
Women already face enough discrimination across the board in the sports journalism world, and any added low-blow comments are not needed, especially by the athletes they are interviewing.
Female sports journalists have fought long and hard to take steps forward in the journey to be taken seriously in this industry, and it is obvious that we are not there yet.
How would you feel if a male made that same sexist remark to your daughters, Mr. Newton?
Luckily the joke is ultimately on you, Cam. You have sparked the fire of motivation within aspiring female sports journalists and current sports journalists across this country to prove small-minded men like you wrong in this field of work.
Let’s get to work ladies.
