Students come together for third annual Underground Formal
March 3, 2018
UK students got down on Friday, March 3, at the third annual Underground Formal.
The event was in Woodford Reserve in Kroger field and was sponsored by the Student Activities Board, Underground Perspective and Elite List.
The event’s theme was masquerade and Mardi Gras. Attendees used a photo booth where they got their photo taken with a variety of masks. The color scheme of the event was black and gold with hints of purple and green. There were two gold backdrops with large balloons and many balloons filled with golf confetti.
Students ranging from freshmen to fifth-year seniors attended the event.
“I was informed about the event by my best friend. I wanted to take the opportunity to enjoy a night out and socialize,” said freshman Khatirah Malik.
DJ Warren Peace controlled music for the event. He kept up with all the students’ music requests. Peace played popular music from artists like Bruno Mars to older artists such as Whitney Houston.
“It was lit,” said sophomore Darian Parker. “My girlfriend made me come, no regrets.”
SAB, UGP and Elite List promoted the event through Twitter, Facebook and multiple posters scattered around campus. Members of UGP and Elite List promoted the event to the students on and off campus to ensure the highest attendance at the event.
“I found out from my girlfriend,” said freshman Andrew Crittenden. “When we heard about it we thought it would be a good time. We both wanted to come together with our friends.”
Not only was this event a big hit, but it also showed a sense of diversity and recognized different students of different backgrounds coming together to have fun. A common theme that was recognized from the event was a sense of belonging.
“I loved it,” said sophomore, Danielle Johnson. “This event is important because it gives black students and minorities a chance to feel accepted and be a part of a social organization.”
