Danny Mendoza, an international relations sophomore, sits back and sighs while working on the Hostile Terrain 94 exhibit on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025, at the Lewis Honors College in Lexington, Kentucky. Each slip of paper on the exhibit represents a life that was lost, trying to cross the border between Mexico and the Sonoran Dessert of Arizona, from 1994-2023. The lives of 3,992 people who died while crossing the Mexican-American border between 1994 and 2023 are commemorated through the pinning of toe tags at the Hostile Terrain 94 exhibit which officially opens at the Lewis Honors College on March 6. This participatory art instillation has been exhibited in over 100 different locations and is one of two domestic shows set to debut in 2025.
