On Sunday, Nov. 24th, No. 12 Kentucky volleyball defeated Arkansas, earning the Wildcats their eighth consecutive SEC championship on Senior Night in Historic Memorial Coliseum.
In 2017, the Wildcats started what would become the eight-championship streak, defeating Georgia in Athens. The win was the first since 1988. The Cats never looked back from there.
With one more SEC opponent remaining, Kentucky is now 13-2. Missouri, the Wildcats’ last regular-season opponent, suffered a loss against Mississippi State, eliminating it from title contention.
Kentucky will still travel to Columbia, Missouri, and play the Tigers on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. ET to conclude the regular season.
Against Arkansas, Brooklyn DeLeye led the offense with 13 kills while Megan Wilson was not far behind her with 12 kills. The Kentucky defense held its ground, not allowing any of the Razorbacks to reach double-digits throughout the whole match.
On that defense, Molly Tuozzo and Emma Grome led the way with both players reaching double figures. Tuozzo anchored at 19 digs and Grome followed shortly behind her with 10. DeLeye managed 12 digs herself, contributing to both sides of the ball.
Kentucky was initially selected to finish third in SEC during the preseason with the SEC gaining Texas and Oklahoma in the offseason. Instead of the bronze, however, UK finished with the gold.
Overall, Kentucky now has eight-straight SEC titles and 13 total. The streak also marks the longest streak of any power four institution in the nation of consecutive championships.
The Wildcats will look to continue their momentum, closing out regular season play and preparing for the post season to continue on this path of victory.
