No. 23 Kentucky men’s basketball defeated Wright State in its first game of the regular season on Monday night, reaching a dominant 103-62 victory.
In a game that saw six different Cats reach double-digits in the points category, senior guard Koby Brea and junior guard Otega Oweh each held a spot above the rest in their own column, shooting a combined 100% from beyond the three-point line, going 7-7 from deep.
Brea went 4-4 from three, contributing to his total of 18 points. The Washington Heights, New York, native went 7-8 from the field, only missing one two-point attempt.
A little less than halfway through the second half, Brea received a no-look dish out from senior guard Kerr Kriisa that he then released, turning around to the crowd before the ball even fell through the net, flashing shades of NBA legend Steph Curry.
“I didn’t realize he did that until he told me in the locker room,” Kentucky big man Amari Williams said. “That’s the confidence he has in shooting. The best three-point shooter in college basketball.”
Brea also tacked on two rebounds and two assists to his personal statline, adding to Kentucky’s total of 41 overall boards and 30 overall assists.
Oweh, for his part, led both teams in total points scored with 21, going 8-9 from the field and a perfect 3-3 from deep.
“Usually you have to shake off some rust, but I feel like we’re pretty decent in terms of being up and down, sticking with the things we do,” Oweh said.
Like both exhibition games, the Newark, New Jersey, native hopped out in front early on, helping set UK up for takeoff and holding four of the team’s first six points.
Oweh also finished the game with three rebounds, one assist and tied senior guard Lamont Butler with a game-high three steals.
Kentucky is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 9, hosting the Bucknell Bison, a team that won its opening game against the Delaware Blue Hens — Kentucky forward Andrew Carr’s first collegiate team — 85-73.
Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. and that game can be viewed on the SEC Network+.
