The No. 21 Kentucky Wildcats women’s soccer team improved to an undefeated record of 8-0 and took the win against Kent State at The Bell Soccer Complex.
It was an eventful night for the seniors Maddie Kemp, Grace Phillpotts and Sophia Mattice, all of whom put the ball in the back of the net.
The win marked the team’s greatest season start in school history and its eighth consecutive victory.
To start the game, the Cats were not holding back as Anna Sikorski’s header rebounded off the underside of the far post and onto the goal line in the fifth minute before Kemp was there to put it away. Kemp scored her third goal of the year with the strike.
Unfortunately for the home fans, Kent State rebounded shortly after Kemp’s goal as Kelsey Salopek tapped the ball past Marz Josephson to level the match.
Despite the setback, Phillpotts scored a miraculous goal, her first of her career just before halftime.
After a corner was cleared, Phillpotts gathered the ball in the middle of the pitch from roughly 30 yards out. The ball sailed over everyone and hit the side post right past the Golden Flashes’ goalie, shocking not only herself but the BBN crowd.
For the final goal of the game in the 52nd minute, Mattice gave the Wildcats the last blow after putting an end to a rush in the box following a corner kick. After the ball was looped in, it found Mattice’s foot in some open space for an easy strike.
It was the midfielder’s first goal in her Kentucky career.
Kentucky will now lock in for SEC play coming up as it faces Florida at home at The Bell Soccer Complex on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m. ET.
