On the bright and cool morning of Wednesday, Aug 26., UK students returned to class for the fall 2015 semester.

Students were welcomed by the heavy doors of Whitehall and the shiny glass doors of the partially-renovated Gatton College.

One student, English and philosophy junior Aaron Meek, sat in the half-finished atrium of Gatton.

“It’s really nice,” Meek said. “I think it was done really intelligently.”

Meek said it was convenient that they made the space usable while construction was still ongoing. Meek, who is also a resident adviser, said he was glad to be on a campus not devoid of student life.

Jack Barnett, an undergraduate studies freshman, said he was looking forward to a good school year and learning as much as possible.

Barnett said his first day of classes was going to be different, “but it’s good because (he gets) to experience more things in a bigger environment.”

Biochemistry freshman Sara Novotny, on her way to her Spanish class in Whitehall, said she took four years of Spanish in high school and didn’t remember much, but she hoped to learn more this year.

Novotny said she expects to learn a lot and to do research while she is at UK.

“Hopefully I … really find out who I am and what I want to do with my life,” Novotny said.

Freshman biology major Syleena Schmitke said her first day of classes was crowded but exciting. Going to basketball games, meeting new people and checking out Aqua Sushi were on the top of her to-do list while she is studying at UK.

Will Adams, a marketing freshman, had just finished his communications 101 class.

“I love it — I’ve only had one class but (my professor) was a very good speaker,” Adams said. “I felt like I learned a lot just from getting to know him and getting to know a little bit about campus.”
