A Dress for the Ball

A new UK student organization helps make dreams come true for many local teen girls who may not be able to afford a prom dress.

The school year is nearing its end, and before thinking about senior trips, graduation or summer vacation, many high school teens have prom at their forefront.

Having a perfect dress for prom is important for high school girls across the country. Some high school prom dates are planned to begin as early as the first week of April — leaving only one month to finalize any last minute plans.

Along with worrying about a limo, boutonniere, shoes, make-up, hairstyles, purses, nails and jewelry, the most critical detail about prom to a young girl is having the perfect dress. However, finding the perfect dress may be easier said than done.

Not only is finding the perfect dress a difficult task, but being able to afford the dress of your dreams is a problem as well.

“We don’t want any girl not to attend prom because she can’t afford to buy a dress,” said Ashley Jackson, president of New Life Volunteering Society.

To help curve the cost of dresses, NLVS will be hosting a prom dress drive on campus on Tuesday evening. Both students and staff are encouraged to donate as many dresses as possible.

The dresses received will be sold at affordable prices ($100 and under) to local high school girls in the Lexington area on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Small Ballroom of the Student Center.

“NLVS decided to do a prom dress drive because we know how expensive prom can be, but we also know how important it is for every girl to experience it,” Jackson said.

Proceeds from purchased prom dresses will be donated to the United Way of the Bluegrass.

The prom dress drive will be held on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in room 113 of the Student Center.
