Outreach program serves elderly

Young at Heart, a program in the Center for Community Outreach, is hosting a Halloween Bingo night on Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. at Pine Meadows Nursing Home.

“Young at Heart’s mission is to connect University of Kentucky students with local area nursing homes, non-profit, and businesses whose main goal is to improve the quality of life for senior citizens,” said program director, Kelsey Field.

Their goal is to bridge the gap between the “young and young at heart.”

Halloween Bingo is one of Young at Heart’s annual events and gives students a chance to mingle with the elderly while helping them through different activities and “celebrating as different residents call out BINGO,” Field said.

Every year Young at Heart selects a different nursing home to celebrate the Halloween season, this year Pine Meadows residents are eager and excited for the event.

“The youthful energy the Young at Heart volunteers bring to the residents is a wonderful (opportunity) to enhance each resident’s day,” Field said.

Another upcoming event is the Make-A-Wreath campaign at Mayfair Manor.

Young at Heart volunteers will help decorate wreaths for residents at Mayfair Manor and hand deliver them in time for holiday season.

Young at Heart also has a Holiday Festival in December to celebrate the holiday season with senior citizens in the Lexington area.
