Calipari doesn’t take stance on Rupp Arena issue

The idea of retooling the arena situation for UK — either by renovating the existing structure or building a new one — has been thrust into the spotlight following Lexington Mayor Jim Gray’s speech earlier this week.

UK head coach John Calipari didn’t take a stance either way, but expressed that whatever happens it should be done at a high level befitting of UK’s program.

“Is it the gold standard,” Calipari said. “That’s what this program should be about, in everything we do, or we shouldn’t do it.”

Calipari mentioned the gold standard should apply to all the facets of UK basketball, including player housing, academics, practice facilities, travel, and the arena itself.

Calipari said he isn’t currently involved in the discussion.

“At this point, I’m not in the chase,” Calipari said. “It’s almost like, when you come to terms with what you’re doing let me know so I can look at it. I’ll give you some ideas at that point.”

Calipari said he doesn’t have the time to get involved in the discussion because of the ongoing season.

“I’ve had people approach me,” Calipari said. “I said, look, I’m coaching basketball. I’m not involved in that stuff right now. I’m coaching this team. If it were June and I had time to go out to lunch I would, but I don’t have time right now.”
