The candidates on the Student Government Association’s ballot presented their plans for next year Tuesday night, at the Greek Political Action Committee’s presidential forum.

Micah Fielden and Nikki Hurt are the only candidates for president and vice president, respectively. At the forum, the two presented their plans for next year as head of the Student Government Association.

The forum was hosted by Candice Cruz, the Panhellenic Council programming chair, and Drake Staples, from the Inter-Greek Programming Assembly. Over 80 students attended the forum to hear the candidates’ plans for SGA.

“The candidates were very aware to get the issues out,” Cruz said.

This year the traditional debate was “more of a working relationship” between the event planners and candidates, Cruz said.

Hurt, who is running for vice president, said that she plans to focus on advocacy, communication and transparency.

Fielden and Hurt have 27 senators, 14 at-large senators and five organizers on their ticket.

One topic discussed was Greek recruitment, and Fielden stated that he would not support deferred or delayed Greek recruitment “for any program,” including K-Week.

He said he would also support a database of old syllabi so student can evaluate what classes they wanted to take.

Hurt said she and Fielden chose the ticket by “correlating the same ideas and values” so everything would work better without conflict.

The candidates plan to improve health on campus by cutting down plastic bottle waste and by making the campus more handicap assessable.

Fielden and Hurt also want to focus on advocating for UK students in Frankfort through the Wildcat Interest Group and opening communication with organizations such as campus halls, the campus police and the Kernel, according to candidates.

“Above all else, Student Government is supposed to represent students’ needs,” Fielden said.
