Running for remembrance

The third annual Tom May Memorial 5K race will take place this Saturday.

The race was started when the members of the Baptist Campus Ministry at UK lost a friend in fall 2008. Tom May was a junior when he passed away due to a car accident on his way home from a Campus Ministry retreat at Laurel Lake.

To keep Tom May in their memory, BCM members decided to plan a 5K race.

“Tom loved running so we figured this would be a great way to remember him,” Adam Daniels, a close friend of May and the head of the fundraising department for BCM, said.

May ran cross country and track for Louisville Male High School and ran regularly throughout college.

“We are looking to have a huge turnout this year to keep Tom in our memory as well as to help fund our mission trips,” Claren Hudspeth, the director of the race, said.

Daniels said that about 130 to 150 runners have participated in past races.

Unlike the past two years, this year’s race has sponsors which include Moe’s, Fro-Joes and Chick-fil-A. Gift cards and various prizes have been donated as well, including a free three-month membership to Lexington Fitness for the winner of the race.

The race is at Commonwealth Stadium Saturday, March 26.

Pre-registration for the race is available until Thursday online at ukbcm.org. It costs $12 for students and $15 for non-students.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the race will begin at 10 a.m. Late registration will cost $15 for students and $20 for non-students.
