Notes and quotes: John Calipari teleconference

Quick notes from UK head coach John Calipari’s teleconference Wednesday. Also, look out for out basketball special preview section, hitting the web tonight and stands tomorrow.

  • UK plays three of the first four games are in neutral sites. Not true road games, but away from Rupp Arena. “This is supposed to toughen us up,” Calipari said. “Early on, that’s what you want. Teams that play all at home in November get bashed in league play.”
  • Calipari said he installed out-of-bounds plays and a defensive press within the last few days. “I’m not sure we’re ready to win basketball games,” Calipari said. “I don’t want us to be in February shape in November. We aren’t looking like we will two or three months from now.”
  • Each of the four talented freshmen “have brought something different to the table,” Calipari said. “But this team will be driven by the four veterans.”
  • Calipari praised Marquis Teague and Kyle Wiltjer for their play in a 125-40 exhibition win Monday. “Teague was really, really unselfish, which then in turn made us unselfish as a team,” Calipari said. “WIltjer surprised everyone with his ability to make plays and make baskets and create for his teammates.” Teague had 12 points, seven assists and two turnovers. Wiltjer led all scorers with 26 points.
