Seniors lead UK softball to series victory over No. 4 Florida

A day after being shutout by the No. 4 Florida Gators (43-8, 20-5 SEC), UK softball (26-27, 12-13 SEC) captured the series Sunday with a 5-1 win with help from seniors Rachel Riley and Chanda Bell.

The loss of the series to UK is the first of the season for Florida.

As was the case Friday, the pitching of senior Chanda Bell set the tone for the game. During her seven innings of action, Bell allowed seven hits and one run, but struck out 13 Florida batters.

UK got the scoring going in the top of the third inning with a RBI single into center by junior Kara Dill, scoring junior Alice O’Brien, who went 3-for-3 on the day.

Florida plated a score in the home-half of the fifth, but after having a bases loaded opportunity, Chanda Bell sat down her 10th strikeout victim and then induced an inning-ending pop-up.

Much of the scoring from UK softball head coach Rachel Lawson’s club came during the sixth inning.

With the score knotted up, UK took a commanding 5-1 lead in the inning with two outs in the books.

Sophomore Lauren Cumbess led it all off with a one-out walk. Alice O’Brien’s third hit of the game was a single to the right-center gap that put runners on the corners.

Senior Brittany Cervantes collected the first RBI of the inning with her single over the head of the Gators’ second baseman.

Kara Dill’s walk loaded the bases for Rachel Riley to clean up.

Riley sent a Florida pitch along the left field line to clear the bases and put herself on second before the inning soon ended.

The Cats complete their regular season with a three-game series in Lexington that is set to begin on Friday at 6 p.m. EST against LSU.
