The UK women’s tennis team opened up SEC play on Friday with an upset win over No. 15 Ole Miss, securing the Cats’ eighth straight home win.
The Cats gained their advantage early by winning the doubles point. Sophomore Aldila Sutjiadi and freshman Mami Adchi claimed No. 1 doubles 8-3 while senior Kelsey Dieters and sophomore Taylor Lederman followed up at No. 3 doubles with an 8-4 victory.
In the singles matches, Sutjiadi fell to the Rebels’ Arianne Hartono, but Dieters defeated Natalie Suk to reclaim UK’s overall lead 2-1. Adachi and Lederman went on to defeat their respective opponents as well to give UK the upset win over Ole Miss.
UK head coach Carlos Drada said he was grateful about how the team played.
“The players listened and executed the patterns that we have been practicing all year and things came together,” Drada said. “Bottom line, at this level you just have to compete and you have to be hungry the whole time and we did a great job of being hungry which allowed us to maximize our potential.”
The Cats will be back in action on Sunday when they take on No. 63 Mississippi State at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex. First serve is set for noon.
