Cats top San Diego 5-1 in Campbell Classic

After beginning the season at 5-1 in Tempe, Az for the Kajikawa Invitational, the UK Softball team (6-1) picked up a win in San Diego against the Toreros (2-4) in the opening game of the Campbell/Carter Classic. The Wildcats would win by a final score of 5-1.

San Diego began the game at the plate as the home team but would not be able to produce much in the offensively. Throughout the span of the game, they produced two hits and had an additional two base-runners in the forms of walks.

Shannon Smith started inside the circle for the Wildcats, pitching two innings. She issued two walks, one in each of the first two innings.

Kelsey Nunley was handed the ball in the top of the third where San Diego batters would be retired in order. It took seven innings for the Toreros to score.

UK on the other hand, was quick to score. The Cats opened the bottom of the first frame producing a run and leaving two on.

Sylver Samuel, the second batter, hit an infield single then stole second. While stealing, a throwing error allowed her to advance to third. Katie Reed would double to the right center gap scoring Samuel. Abbey Cheek was walked before a strikeout ended a threatening UK inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Cats picked up four more runs. After a strikeout to start the inning, Nikki Sagermann was issued a walk. Cheek hit a triple down the right field line, scoring Sagermann on the play. Brooklin Hinz followed with a double to left field, scoring Cheek.

Jenny Schaper then reached on an error by the right fielder. Ansley Smith hit a single scoring Schaper and Hinz, but was cut down attempting to reach second.

The game against San Diego was one of two for UK’s Thursday slate. The Cats took on San Diego State following the San Diego win.
