With all 15 players of the 2016-17 Kentucky basketball team officially on UK’s campus, the first practice of the new season has begun.

The practices are closed door sessions, but CoachCal.com, the official website of head coach John Calipari, has released the first practice report of the summer. The observations and opinions of the session are said to be only that of Metz Camfield, the editor of the website.

Here are some of the highlights of the report:

  • The defense of guards Isaiah Briscoe, De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk and Dominique Hawkins appears to be on point early. Each guard is observed having a lot of length and speed that could give opposing teams fits in games.
  • Chemistry is starting to build, with players communicating and cheering each other on during the warmup drill.
  • Bam Adebayo didn’t participate in some of the drills to ensure he’s 100 percent healthy come the season opener. The 6-foot-10 forward is reportedly dealing with an ankle injury and was in a walking boot during the first week of summer classes.
  • Sacha Killeya-Jones was on an exercise bike throughout the practice. No reason was given as to why other than Calipari giving a message to the whole team stressing the importance of taking care of their bodies and making sure to address injuries properly.
  • Briscoe has taken on the leadership role with open arms. The sophomore guard was the most vocal player on the court and played with extreme confidence. Briscoe also reportedly “shot the ball well for the most part.”
  • Derek Willis appears to be getting comfortable aging on the court. The sharpshooting forward was hampered by an ankle injury late last season and never fully returned to form during the postseason. Willis reportedly made a nice defensive play on a drive to the hoop by Monk and blocked the guad’s shot. Willis also performed shot-fake drive to the basket and slammed it home with one hand.
  • Because the NCAA allows former players to return to campus and practice with their college team, former Wildcat DeAndre Liggins (2008-11) made an appearance during the practice and went up against some of the current players. Liggins has been the NBA D-League Defensive Player of the Year in two of the last three seasons.
