The Don Jacobs Sr. Charitable Foundation gave UK $10 million for undergraduate science education and the new Academic Science Building, the university announced Tuesday.

Don Jacobs, who owned car dealerships in Lexington, died last year at age 81, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.

$8 million of the gift will fund the Academic Science Building, which will now be named the Don & Cathy Jacobs Science Building, after Jacobs and his wife, UK Now said on their website. The remaining $2 million will support undetermined academic and research investments.

UK Now said the Jacobs have donated about $20 million to UK. Their gifts have supported many areas, including the Gatton College of Business and UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital.

“Don and I always believed that to whom much is given, much is required,” Cathy Jacobs said Tuesday in a press release. “I am grateful that we have been blessed so that we can help others.”

The Academic Science Building is a $112 million project and opened in August, UK Now said.
