Sunday afternoon the UK Women’s soccer team looked to gain their first win of the season in SEC play against the Vanderbilt Commodores. In the end, the Cats gained a point in the league table with the 2-2 tie, but are still yet to capture that first win.

The start of the game at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex brought the offensive aggression and attacks right away.

Hope had seemed lost for the Cats when the Commodores scored 2 goals within the first 11 minutes.

A UK backline error in the 10th minute gave Vanderbilt the ammunition they needed and Kacy Scarpa scored off the play making the score 1-0. Just a minute later, a Vandy corner kick resulted in a re-fire just past the reach of UK goalkeeper Evangeline Soucie that boosted the score 2-0.

After the half, the Cats came back strong and answered in similar fashion. In the 48th minute, freshman Marissa Bosco scored off a Tanya Samarzich assist,  which crossed the face of the goal to Bosco who drilled in a goal to the goalkeeper’s right.

In the 59th minute, Samarzich played another ball to the near post when Zoe Swift tucked the ball into the back of the net off a slide that equalized the game 2-2.

With the game still tied at the end of regulation, the Cats and Commodores resumed play in the first overtime without a goal, forcing a second overtime.

The only legitimate scoring attempt in either overtime period occurred in the dying minutes of the second. The Commodores attacked on goal in the final seconds of the game but Soucie made a close save by punching the ball away from the frame.

The save left the game at a 2-2 tie and preserved the road point for the Cats. The Cats are now 4-7-3 overall and 0-5-2 in conference play. Still looking for a first win with only a few games left in conference play, the Cats are set to take on rival Tennessee Volunteers at 7:30 pm at the Bell.
