David Heti to bring laughs to The Green Lantern

Stand-up comedian David Heti headlines the Green Lantern Comedy Show at 9 p.m. this Tuesday in Lexington.

Heti, originally from Toronto, Canada, now travels around the states to share his passion of comedy with others. The comedian enjoys telling jokes in a performance setting, and considers comedy to be a type of art.

“Comedy is a pretty simple way to communicate to people bizarre ideas,” Heti said.

Some may think that Heti’s degree in philosophy and two degrees in law do not connect with his current career, but he disagrees.

“They are all ways to expand interaction of individuals and norms,” said Heti.

The Canadian native thrives in a setting where he is headlining act. One of the perks of Heti’s profession is meeting other comedians. Hardly ever does he do a performance alone. While touring, he is able to open shows and make make meaningful connections with those he works with.

“We have a shared passion, we live similar lives, and we appreciate the same art form,” Heti said.

When asked about the people that attend his shows, Heti felt that his audience was filled with people of all types, from different places. The comedian believes these viewers tend to not take themselves too seriously, which is a great thing.

“They are perspective in a sense, easygoing and I think they are reflective,” said Heti.

According to Heti, unless a comedian is working in a larger city like LA or New York it’s difficult to make a living. His upcoming show on Nov. 1 at The Green Lantern will be his first trip to Lexington.

Heti enjoys the fact that this career is less structured, no alarm clock going off early in the morning. But as many individuals are, he values his free time.

“In my free time I like to walk or swim, but I always just enjoy the down time,” said Heti.

In the future, Heti hopes to be able to focus on stand up comedy alone. Right now, he has a lot of administrative duties such as booking and hanging up posters.

“I would like to not worry about anything else other than the ideas and communicating them to people,” said Heti.
