College degree pays off by 34, study says

A new study by the College Board shows that it takes an average of 12 years to gain back the cost of getting a Bachelor’s degree. In other words, the average person will be around 34 by the time they see true benefits from getting a college degree.

Despite the time it takes to pay off, having a college degree earns you a median 67 percent more than those with just a high school degree. The unemployment rate for 25 to 34-year-olds with a college degree was 2.6 percent in 2016, five percentage points below the unemployment rate among the high school educated population.

The average undergraduate loan borrower graduated with just over $30,000 in student debt last year.
