Women’s studies growing in popularity

Since its inception in the 1960s, the concept of women’s studies programs has become increasingly popular among college students.

In the United States, the number of degrees in gender studies increased by over 300% between 1990 and 2015, with more than 2,000 degrees earned.

Many students take gender studies courses to fulfill core requirements, and some are inspired to pursue a minor or even a major in the field. Women’s and gender studies programs have grown to encompass an array of gender-related topics, including gender’s relationship with race, class, sexuality and ethnicity.
