UNC student section wasn’t actually filled with UNC students

At the NCAA National Championship game on Monday night in Arizona, the University of North Carolina student section was a little, well, strange.

Nearly 70 percent of the students in the UNC student section were actually students from Arizona State. The students, wearing plain white t-shirts, were given free tickets to the game because UNC didn’t sell out their student section. They were instructed to wear plain white shirts to not show affiliations with any other school, including ASU. 

But the fandom didn’t stay completely disguised. During a timeout, an ASU message aired on the videoboard as ASU students cheered for their school. And although they were not instructed to cheer specifically for UNC, most students chose to support their section and cheer anyway. Without the videoboard, no one might have known.
