Kayla Pigg at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Feb. 2017.
I grew up surrounded by music. There has never been a time in my life when someone wasn’t either playing, singing or discussing it. It’s a part of everyone in my family, whether it’s something they love or something that has affected their life significantly.
I grew up on my father’s stories of the days he played in bands, and as I got older, he would tell me the real stories of how he toured with Exile and even opened for Ike and Tina Turner, and how it changed his life for both better and worse. When I think of my father, I think about us listening to oldies in his truck and him telling me everything he knew about the song and its artist.
My tastes in music though, have always varied from that of my family. My father loves James Brown, my mom loves the Eagles, my sister loves Crosby Stills and Nash and I always had a thing for The Beach Boys.
This is not to say that I didn’t like all of those artists, I do. Though I think it shows that the type of music we listen to can tell someone a lot about who we are. Your playlist is almost like taking a look into your soul, or at the very least your brain. So let’s get to it, cracking open my skull one playlist at a time.
