Armed man apprehended on campus

A gun-carrying man was reportedly apprehended by UKPD, after he was spotted entering Buell Armory just before 1 p.m., President Eli Capilouto wrote in a campus-wide email.

A UK employee saw Diontre Davis enter the armory and suspected that he was carrying a gun. The employee alerted UKPD, and according to the email, officers responded within 90 seconds.

Davis, who is not a UK student, has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and criminal trespassing. The email said that more charges will likely be filed.

In the past, Davis has been reported to UKPD by a UK student for allegedly uploading harassing social media posts, the email said.

Capilouto wrote that UK alert was not used because the situation was handled “so quickly” that an alert was not necessary.

“I want to applaud the responsiveness of our UK Police Department, who acted with tremendous skill and speed to a dangerous situation,” Capilouto said. “I also want to thank employees in the Armory, who−when they saw something they thought was suspicious–did not hesitate to report it to UK Police. Campus safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
