Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency in Kentucky due to potential severe flooding this weekend.
According to WHAS11, there is currently a flood watch for all of Kentucky until Sunday afternoon.
“We have been through too many of these (severe weather events) to not be fully prepared,” Beshear said. “I’m preemptively going to sign a state of emergency that will allow us to pre-position assets from National Guard, to swift boat crews all around the state.”
According to the National Weather Service website, rain will begin arriving before daybreak on Saturday and continue until midday Sunday.
Rain will be moderate to heavy at times and is expected to range from 2 to 5-plus inches, locally higher amounts than usual.
The National Weather Service said that significant flooding including widespread areal, river and isolated flash flooding is possible due to the rainfall.
The Lexington area is expected to receive 3 to 4 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
Beshear said we won’t know exactly what will happen with the rain until Saturday, but being prepared and cautious is his biggest concern.
“But for each and every one of you on Saturday, be careful,” Beshear said. “Be careful because of the amount of rain that will be coming down, it will make it hard to drive. Be careful because flash flooding, especially across our roads, can create dangerous conditions.”
