By Rachel Aretakis

One of the university’s two coal-fired steam plants opened its doors to UK students for a look inside how campus is heated.

More than 45 people toured the main campus plant Wednesday afternoon, organized by the Kentucky Energy Club.

The plant, located between South Limestone and South Upper Street, supplies all the steam for campus, said Tom Whitaker, a plant senior supervisor.

The 75,000-pound coal-fired boilers provide heat and/or hot water for campus buildings, he said.

UK’s chapter of the Kentucky Energy Club opened the tour to all students to show how the plant works.

“Energy power has never been taught,” Evan Schroader, the club’s president, said. “The energy IQ is generally low. We want to educate people because it’s never been taught.”

While students often pass the plant (which is near the Taylor Education Building and just down the street from Jamba Juice), many have never been inside, besides for class.

Todd Campbell, an operator at the plant, said in his two years working there, only engineering students have toured the plant. This was the first time he had seen an open tour to students, he said.

Touring students watched as Campbell pulled a chain down, slowly cranking an iron door open. He then grabbed a hoe and continually raked ashes out through a piping system to the ash silo.

Two times a shift, someone climbs down the narrow, industrial steps to “pull ashes.” About every four days, the ash is halled away in a truck.

Whitaker led the first group of students through the plant, which was built in 1934 and most recently renovated in 1978.

He said all of the coal comes from Perry County, Ky., and none of it is from strip mines. While many people think the plant produces electricity, it only produces steam, he said.

In response to several student questions, Whitaker discussed air pollution and steam on campus.

“We meet the (EPA) standards because you can’t see anything coming out of (the stacks),” Whitaker said.

He said he is required to go to school every six months to learn about new standards.

Among the students touring was Kristen Vinson, a journalism senior who thinks every student should go on a tour. She said she is interested in the Beyond Coal movement.

“I think (students) like coal because they think they have to,” she said, regarding the university being associated with Friends of Coal.

Groups learned the plant’s process from when the coal comes in on trucks, to when it is burned. Brock Meade, a psychology freshman, said he would characterize himself as having an anti-coal stance.

“It is nice to come in and see how the coal-fired power plant works,” he said.

He said his opinion about coal didn’t change after the tour.

Club Coordinator Bree McCarney said this is the first time it has done a campus plant tour, but members have traveled to other plants throughout the state. She said she wants to make this a regular occurance.

“We’re just about education,” McCarney said. “We don’t have a political stance.”

McCarney and Schroader started the club at UK with a state grant “to elevate the energy IQ for the community,” Schroader said.

The club, which was started last year, is focused on community outreach, education and fact-based analysis, McCarney said.

“The politics behind (coal) are kind of distorted,” Schroader said. “We want to focus on facts, not politics.”

Schroader, who is a mechanical engineering senior, also works in the Center for Applied Energy Research with Jack Groppo, the club’s faculty adviser.

Groppo wanted to do the tour to “let people see how heat is generated and how campus is heated.”

“Energy affects everyone,” he said.

He said he was thrilled with the number of people who came to the tour, and hopes this sparks interest in coal issues.

“Everyone is going to form an opinion,” Groppo said. “At least form it on fact, not hearsay.”

For more information, the Kentucky Energy Club is sponsoring a panel with Bob Wiseman, UK’s vice president of facilities, and Shane Tedder, its sustainability coordinator, to discuss the plant as well as other campus energy issues.

The panel is at 7 p.m. Thursday in Student Center room 230.

UK rolled to a 6-0 record on Saturday, defeating No. 22 Tulsa 4-1 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend.

By winning against Tulsa, the Cats advanced to the round of 16 in the National Indoor Championships for the third straight year.

Overall, it’s the fifth straight round of 16 the Cats have made, including the past two indoor tournaments and their outdoor appearances over the last couple seasons.

The deciding match of the tournament didn’t involve Eric Quigley or Anthony Rossi, as would be expected — it involved sophomore Alejandro Gomez, who’s ranked No. 111 in the nation. Gomez’s big win on the final day of the kickoff weekend clinched the match for UK.

After splitting the first two sets against Tristan Jackson, Gomez suddenly went on a roll, dominating the third set with a 6-0 victory. The score of the match was 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.

While there’s no doubt Gomez was impressive, he wasn’t the only one. His match may have been the biggest, but his teammates were rather impressive also.
Fifth-ranked Eric Quigley was impressive, taking his match 6-3, 6-4. Thirty-sixth-ranked Anthony Rossi — just a couple weeks removed from his championship in the SEC Coaches’ Indoor tournament in Lexington — also played well, winning 7-5, 7-5.

Tom Jomby was the team’s fourth winner, while Alex Musialek and Panav Jha didn’t finish their matches (both were winning their respective games when play was halted).

UK remains undefeated on the season, and it has been a great beginning for a very promising team.

Cedric Kauffmann, UK’s associate head coach, was especially proud of the sophomore class, saying he was “particularly happy” with how the sophomore athletes had been performing.

Since 2009, the Cats are 47-9 on their home court, making a big statement to other teams coming to town.
The team won’t continue into the National Championships’ round of 16 until Feb. 17, but in the meantime, the Cats will play host to Pepperdine noon on Sunday.

UK’s offensive adjustments from the St. John’s game proved to be successful in UK’s victory against North Carolina Saturday at Rupp Arena.

While it is still early in the season, the Cats believe this won’t be the last time they play UNC in 2011-12.

“I definitely think we’ll probably see them again,” senior guard Darius Miller said. “We hope to be there toward the end of the season in the tournament and we’re pretty sure they will be.”

UK head coach John Calipari told his players this would be a game of runs, which was proven to be true with the matchup’s eight lead changes.

“It was just going back and forth, point-to-point,” freshman forward Anthony Davis said. “Somebody had to get a stop. I’m glad it was us, on the last play.

Following a last-second shot blocked by Davis, the Cats were able to recover the ball for the final seconds to steal a 73-72 win from the Tar Heels.

“He saved us,” Miller said. “Ant came out of nowhere. I didn’t even see him, his arms are so long, but he definitely saved the game for us.”

The game was a continuous battle for both teams, with each team attacking relentlessly for the full 40 minutes.

But for the first 20 minutes, it was the Tar Heels attacking the rim, leading UK 43-38 at the half.

The Cats were able to get to the rim, but unable to finish, struggling in the paint with the size of UNC’s Harrison Barnes, Tyler Zeller and John Henson.

With the experience from these players, UK’s veteran leadership was going to be vital for a successful outcome with UNC. Calipari especially wanted sophomore Terrence Jones to step up, and he did.

Jones recorded 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks, each while competing with Henson on matchups.

“Terrence Jones, that was his best game of the year,” he said, “and he was challenged by it.”

The Cats came back with a 5-0 run to open the second half and continued to strike until the Cats finally took the lead.

As Calipari predicted, the game resulted in a game of runs, essentially trading shot-for-shot until the final seconds.

Both teams answered quickly with each possession until the Cats were able to slow down the pace of the game by running down the clock, which allowed them to set up plays and maintain control of the game.

“I think we did a really good job running offense in the second half by slowing it down and taking away the fast break points,” Jones said. “I feel we limited them to about two of those. It was a really good game plan by Coach (Calipari).”

But with a road trip to a tough Indiana crowd approaching next week, the Cats are concentrating on staying focused and taking things game by game.

“I’ve already talked to a few of the guys about how crazy it’s gonna be,” Miller said. “The crowd does a great job of getting them hyped up and getting them pumped up and they’re gonna be ready to play, so that’s another tough game.”

Three things we learned from UK’s 81-59 win over St. John’s:

1. Anthony Davis is a monster — Does it count as a thing we learned if it’s only something that was reinforced (even if it was REALLY reinforced)? He had 15 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocks, and was on pace for the school’s second triple-double before getting hung up on eight blocks with about 10 minutes left in the second half. Still, with 13 NBA personnel in the building, he reaffirmed why he is the clear favorite to be the No. 1 pick.

2. UK’s strength right now, clearly, is the defense. It had its best defensive effort of the season, and that’s saying something considering the Cats have held every opponent under 35 percent shooting. St. John’s shot 19-for-60 and committed 19 turnovers. In the first half, it couldn’t get a shot off before the shot clock expired four times.

3. Part of that defensive effort was a school-record 18 blocks. Oddly enough, Eloy Vargas, playing in place of Davis in the last four minutes, got the tying and record-breaking blocks. Between those and the dunks (Terrence Jones and Darius Miller both had nasty slams), it was a full-out aerial assault.

More coming after the game.

Three things we learned from UK’s 87-63 win over Portland:

1. UK had better ball distribution. In the first half, its first 10 made field goals were all assisted, and at the end of the half, UK had 11 assists to one turnover. UK didn’t shoot the ball especially well in that half (48.3 percent) but it shared it well. Prior to this game, UK had assisted on 78 of its 155 field goals. (UK ended the game with 20 assists and four turnovers.)

2. UK has to find a way to rebound better — against a team that had outrebounded its opponents by less than one per game, UK was outrebounded 21-16 in the first half. On the important side of the court, it allowed Portland to grab 8 offensive rebounds while getting only 13 defensive rebounds. (The flip side wasn’t much better, as UK got three offensive rebounds and Portland got 13 defensive boards.) I liked Anthony Davis’ efforts on the glass. But moving forward — especially against North Carolina and in the SEC — UK will need more rebounding. I remember that being one of Calipari’s preaching points early in SEC play last year, as he urged his team to “gang rebound.” This team might have to adopt that same mentality. (UK ended the game getting outrebounded 39 to 38.)

3. UK has more Oregonians on its roster (two — Terrence Jones and Kyle Wiltjer) than Portland (one). Just a little geography factoid for you.

4 (BONUS!). This game had nothing on the football game.

The UK Iron Pour, in its 19th year, is an educational process first, but it is also a community event, said Garry Bibbs, an associate professor and head of the sculpture department.

It’s a big fire.

But it’s also more than that.

The UK Iron Pour, in its 19th year, is an educational process first, but it is also a community event, said Garry Bibbs, an associate professor and head of the sculpture department.

Students, who are mostly sculpture-focused but also come from other majors, learned how to make molds and cast iron at Saturday’s pour outside the Reynolds Building.

Faville Donahue, a senior dual major in art studio and mechanical engineering, said the pour is like “a big family event.”

It also teaches lessons unrelated to art.

“Especially in an event like this, it’s all about teamwork,” Donahue said. “Everybody has to work together in the preparation to make sure everything gets done. … You have to take initiative.”

Bibbs said many sculpture alumni returned for the event and have taken charge.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to have been able to produce all these outstanding students, who are professional now, who actually come back and actually run the pour,” he said.

The SCRAP Student Sculpture Club used the event for fundraising and got the community involved. Many spectators at the pour etched their own designs into scratch blocks, into which iron was poured later in the day.

“It’s another wonderful outlet for the audience to get involved — especially children, they love them,” Bibbs said, “and you also get a little memento from the actual experience of watching the pour.”

And that experience drew spectators throughout the day. Children, adults, art alumni and others stayed until dark to watch the process. The first iron was poured just after 4 p.m.

Donahue said the event is fun for art students, but it involves risks.

“It is extremely dangerous because the metal is about 3,200 degrees,” she said, “and that’s why we have to wear all this gear and wear it in a specific manner.”

Donahue said she was “mildly burned” early in the day, and another student got metal in his boot and had to be taken to the hospital. One woman passed out from fumes while charging the iron.

But despite the dangers involved, an iron pour can be a rewarding learning experience for students.

“Once you learn this process, you’re already apt to take this to any school and already be in practice,” Bibbs said, “which will also make you a better candidate for being a graduate student.”

Bibbs said the iron pour is a unique process for getting something cast that’s become a regular event for many top universities. He said it is less expensive than getting something cast in bronze or other metals.

One alumnus, he said, got iron skillets poured as Christmas gifts for his family members.

Also, Bibbs said, the Iron Pour is a recruiting tool for UK. He said other schools sometimes bring potential graduate or fine arts students, but the pour also draws in those who might be interested in taking a first sculpture class.

And children in awe of the fire might turn out to be sculpture students.

“You never know what child up there is like, ‘Man I’m gonna do this someday,’” Bibbs said.

On the same day former UK quarterback Bill Ransdall, the last quarterback to defeat Florida in 1986, was inducted into the UK Athletics Hall of Fame, the Gators were in town seeking their 25th consecutive win over the Cats. Florida made sure the streak was never in doubt, beating up on UK early and often on its way to a 48-10 victory in Commonwealth Stadium.

“Our kids are fighting, scratching and clawing,” UK head coach Joker Phillips said. “We’re just not playing very smart. They’ll continue to fight. I believe in those guys, but we’ve got to get some things corrected, and this begins with me.”

The Cats, who have had trouble getting going at the start games this year, got off to a hot start against Florida Saturday, forcing a three-and-out by the Gators deep in their own territory off the opening kickoff. The Cats hung with the Gators athletic pro-style offense, trading punts early.

But with the UK offense driving mid-way through the first quarter, freshman running back Josh Clemons fumbled the ball, turning it over to Florida. On the next play, Florida quarterback John Brantley found his tight end Gerald Christian open deep down the middle of the field for a 45-yard touchdown.

After that, the floodgates opened and UK was never able to threaten its SEC East counterpart again. The offense struggled once again, suffering missed blocks, poor communication, dropped passes and turnovers. UK turned the ball over four times on the evening, including two interceptions and a fumble on the goal line by Newton, as well as the Clemons fumble.

“Something has to change, something has to give, and right now we’re not taking care of the football,” junior wide receiver La’Rod King said. “You can’t do that. Four turnovers — you’re not beating a team, like nobody. So that has to change quick.”

Clemons, the victim of the early fumble that shifted the momentum in Florida’s favor, left the game with a strained hamstring, leaving Phillips to rely primarily on third-string junior running back CoShik Williams. The offensive line, which consisted of UK’s five original preseason starters for the first time in 2011, was still unable to establish any kind of threat running. UK rushed for a very quiet 134 yards for the game.

But the Cats’ struggles in the run game were dwarfed by their inability to find consistency passing the ball. Junior quarterback Morgan Newton looked anxious in the pocket, forcing throws high or into traffic while missing wide open receivers in space. When Newton was able to get the ball to his targets, they had trouble holding onto the football, whether it be dropped passes, fumbles or deflections resulting in interceptions.

“Turnovers will kill you, and they did,” Newton said. “They gave them short fields and a lot of good teams are going to capitalize on those short fields and get some points out of them. We just have to do better in that regard.”

The defense, which held its ground against Florida offensive coordinator Charlie Weis’ explosive offense early, wore down as the game progressed and was unable to keep the Cats in the game while the offense faltered.

“They were fast,” senior linebacker Ronnie Sneed, a Florida-native, said. “We always feel like we have a good shot at beating any team. When we come out and the score is run up, it gets under your skin and we just have to go back to the drawing boards and try to figure out what we did wrong and what we need to do to correct those issues.”

The Cats’ defense allowed Florida to gain 520 total yards for the game as opposed to just 299 from UK. Brantley finished the game with 115 yards through the air and one touchdown, but it was Florida’s ground game that left the Cats helpless in their home stadium.

Florida running backs Chris Rainey, Jeff Demps and Mike Gillislee combined for 31 rushes for 346 yards and three touchdowns. In addition, Trey Burton, another running back who scored six times against UK in 2010, carried the ball six times for 33 yards and a touchdown of his own.

“The speed of the game, it’s kind of like lightning struck the outhouse and we were in it,” UK co-defensive coordinator Rick Minter said. “Our kids, they try hard, but the speed of that game is as fast a game as you’ll see all year because of the speed of the players.”

Senior linebacker Danny Trevathan did his best to keep UK close, clobbering Brantley in the second quarter, forcing a fumble that would lead to UK’s only touchdown of the evening and knocking Brantley out of the game for the remainder of the half. Still, UK trailed 31-10 at halftime, and UK was never able to scratch and claw its way back into the game.

As the Florida’s lead grew larger, fans began to express their frustrations towards Newton and Phillips. In the fourth quarter, Phillips removed Newton from the game in favor of freshman backup quarterback Maxwell Smith. For the quarter, Smith was 6-11 for 41 yards, but Phillips assured Big Blue Nation that the Cats do not have a quarterback controversy.

“Every opportunity we have to get Max in the game, we will, and we had an opportunity tonight,” Phillips said. “If we’re struggling at quarterback, we know that the guy can go in there and handle himself. He did a decent job tonight, so this experience gives us that opportunity.”

The focus for the Cats now turns to a visit to No. 2 ranked Louisiana State on Oct. 1. Newton said he treats each week like its own one game season, and that he will learn from the loss and move on. But after losses the last two weeks, a road game against LSU is a daunting task, and Minter is aware of the situation his team is in.

“In football, you’re only as good as your last time out, so we’re not very good tonight, not very good last week,” Minter said. “We got a lot of work to do.”

Annual volunteering event UK FUSION broke a record with its number of participants Monday.

UK FUSION, a community service project where groups of students volunteer at different sites around Lexington, broke a record with its number of participants Monday. It’s organizers tweeted today that 1,384 students volunteered at more than 100 sites, a record amount of participants since the event began in 2003.

FUSION, which stands for For Unity and Service In Our Neighborhood, began at Haggin Field where students completed registration and attended an opening ceremony featuring UK President Dr. Eli Capilouto and Lexington Mayor Jim Gray. Some groups walked to their volunteer sites, and buses transported other groups to their sites.

Notable sites included the Explorium of Lexington, the UK Arboretum, Living Arts and Sciences Center and St. Agnes’ House.

An international biker pedaled his way across UK’s campus Saturday, capturing the attention of many incoming freshmen during their first few days on campus.

Thomas Oehler, a 28-year-old Austrian trial biker, made a pit stop at UK during his five-week national tour, sponsored by Red Bull. Oehler participates in trial riding, in which the rider attempts to keep his or her feet from touching the ground while riding through an obstacle course.

Spectators gathered around South Campus Saturday afternoon as Oehler performed numerous tricks for onlookers.

RJ Ross, an English freshman, said he was impressed by Oehler’s versatile performance.

“It’s awesome seeing him out across campus improvising and doing different things,” Ross said.

Though the tour began just a few days prior to his visit, Oehler said he is always thinking about what to do next.

“I sit in the car and look around me,” he said. “I am constantly planning things. It never stops.”

Oehler said he thrives off of his audience and tries to draw a large crowd.

“It’s always hard to find the really crowded places, but once you get more and more people involved, they just keep coming,” he said.

During his performance, Oehler incorporated students by telling them to lie down side-by-side as he jumps over their bodies.

“I got pretty scared. I’ve never seen anything like that before,” Jordan Barrass, a business freshman, said.

Students actively participated, and took photos and video of Oehler’s performance.

“It kind of gives you a feeling of what the whole campus is about,” said Carl Groathouse, a computer science engineering freshman. “You can become involved in events just by being here.”

Oehler participates in other styles of riding, including dirt and mountain biking. He began trial riding at age 12 and started competing shortly after. He is a five-time Austrian trial bike champion and won the European Championship in 2006. In 2008, Oehler was named the World Champion. He currently holds the world record for bike high jump, reaching 2.9 metres.

“I like the technical parts — playing around on the bike and doing really tricky lines. That’s my thing,” he said.

Watch a time lapse video of the University of Kentucky freshman class rushing the field at Commonwealth Stadium and forming a giant K as their class picture.

Each year, Freshman get to rush onto Commonwealth Stadium’s field well before the players suit up for their first game.

Our staff attended Big Blue U, the event that accommodates a normally illegal act, and shot a time lapse video of the students forming a large K, then leaving the field.

Before the students could rush the field, high-profile speakers like UK head football coach Joker Phillips and the new UK President Dr. Eli Capilouto gave advice to the students about having successful college lives.

The K formed in the center of the field is composed of only freshman students. This year’s class holds more than 4,000 new students (not all of which are pictured here).

John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins were on the winning side of the most highly anticipated summer league game.

John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins were on the winning side of the most highly anticipated summer league game.

The pair were on the Washington, D.C.-based Goodman League side, which also featured Kevin Durant. They went up against the Los Angeles-based Drew League, which featured NBA players such as James Harden.

Wall scored 28 points, including six of the last eight points in the Goodman League’s 135-134 win, with Durant scoring the eventual game-winning points on free throws. (Sports Illustrated has three good photos of Cousins and Wall in this gallery.)

Cousins was referred to by the announcer as Bad Attitude and “was just too strong as he muscled (JaVale) McGee off during a key second-quarter stretch on consecutive possessions for easy dunks. Cousins, whose conditioning was a major question mark entering his rookie season last year, appeared trim and in good shape,” according to the USA Today.

“Everybody thinks it’s all about the money,” Wall told the Associated Press. “It’s not about the money. I just want to play basketball, I love to play basketball.”

According to The Associated Press, the gym was packed with more people than the 1,500 capacity.

Here’s video via BallisLife of the Top 10 plays from the game, which includes a few nifty passes from Wall and a throwdown dunk from Cousins.

UK head football coach Joker Phillips announced Thursday that sophomore defensive back Jerrell Priester would be leaving the Cats just two weeks prior to their season opener against Western Kentucky. Priester played in nine games for UK in 2010, mostly on special teams. Against Charleston Southern, Priester made four tackles, including two tackles for loss. He also returned two kickoff for the Cats in 2010, averaging 27.5 yards per return.

Co-defensive coordinator Rick Minter also announced that freshman defensive back Glenn Faulkner is on a leave of absence from the team due to what Minter referred to as a “tragic death in the family.” It is not expected that Faulkner will miss the team’s 2011 opener on September 1.

Among the rush invading the Kirwan-Blanding complex Friday were football head coach Joker Phillips and UK President Dr. Eli Capilouto and his wife, Dr. Mary Lynne Capilouto, who helped unload cars and move mini-refrigerators.

Freshman Brandon Knight, senior Josh Harrellson and junior DeAndre Liggins field questions prior to the team leaving for the 2011 Final Four in Houston.

Though members of the UK basketball team have been close to one another since early this season, it took greater success for the teammates to truly trust each other.

“From the beginning, we’ve all been cool with each other,” freshman Brandon Knight said. “But we started to trust each other over the past couple of months, especially this last month. We really had to pull together as a team to go into battle.”

Knight said the newfound reliance within the team began in practice, when players started holding one another accountable and not letting each other down. As one of those leaders responsible for making sure others are doing what they need to do, Knight has come into his own this season.

“Each day, I’m just trying to find a way to get better,” Knight said. “From beginning to end, each day everyone tried to find what they could do to get better. (UK head coach John Calipari) just did his best to push each and every one of us.”

Knight said the area in which he feels most improved is in his ability to run the team.

“When I got here, I didn’t have everything I needed to do as far as being a leader,” he said. “Being vocal, stuff like that. I’ve been able to mature in that area.”

Junior DeAndre Liggins, who has also stepped up in late-game situations, especially against North Carolina in UK’s Elite Eight victory, said Knight, who he credits to be a harder worker than himself, boasts intelligence as his greatest attribute.

“I just like to be around him no matter how he is playing. At the end of the game, he always makes the big plays to win.”

Liggins will be primarily responsible for guarding Connecticut standout junior Kemba Walker in Saturday’s Final Four matchup. Walker scored 29 when UK met the Huskies in the Maui Tournament to begin the 2010-11 season. He averages 23.9.

“I have to try to contest all of his shots,” Liggins said of slowing down Walker. “The first time we played, we’d played three games in three days, so I was kind of worn down. I had no legs.

“He’s real tough. My job is just make it hard for him, to contain him … If he shoots 25 shots and he makes them, oh well. He’s going to score his points, he’s going to do what he do. Our job is to stop other guys, too.”

One player who has fallen under criticism as of late is freshman Terrence Jones, whose scoring blossomed early in the year but has decreased as of late.

“He’s accepted (receiving less touches) fine,” Knight said. “He’s doing whatever it takes for our team to win. He didn’t mind stepping back a little bit, allowing the older players to become more aggressive, he was fine with that. That just shows what type of person and player he is; unselfish.”

But for players and fans alike, the magnitude of UK returning to the Final Four for the first time in 13 seasons hasn’t “sunk in” just yet.

“We’re still just kind of in the moment right now,” Knight said. “We’re not really satisfied with the Final Four. We know (fans) are happy about it, but we just want to keep going.”

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — For the first time this postseason, it wasn’t senior Victoria Dunlap who led the UK women’s basketball team to a victory.

Dunlap, who committed her second personal foul at the 9:55 mark in the first half, was forced to watch her team from the bench early in its NCAA Tournament first-round victory over Hampton University.

Despite its leading scorer top rebounder sidelined, UK topped the Pirates 66-62 in overtime.

“It wasn’t easy, you can’t expect to just go out there and win games,” Dunlap said. “… Any team coming into this tournament is not going to sit there and let somebody just beat you. They are going to fight and play hard, and that’s definitely what they did.”

But that didn’t stop junior Keyla Snowden from taking charge of the Cats. She finished with a game-high 19 points, including 4-for-9 from three-point land.

“They were able to match our intensity,” she said. “That’s what we try to bring out when we play opponents. I give a lot of credit to Hampton.”

No. 4 seed UK has now won four consecutive NCAA Tournament first-round games, and it will advance to play No. 5 seed North Carolina Monday at 9:30 ET.

UK head coach John Calipari and players DeAndre Liggins, Doron Lamb and Josh Harrellson field question prior to the Southeastern Conference tournament.

There isn’t much argument that UK, the No. 2 seed from the Southeastern Conference East, has an easier road to the tournament championship than the No. 1 seeded Florida when it comes to possible opponents.

“I think we got the easy side of the (SEC) bracket,” freshman Doron Lamb said.

But the Cats () also know a tournament, SEC or NCAA, isn’t going to be easy. Let alone the fact UK plays with six guys, something Lamb said has been his biggest surprise this season.

“We just work hard,” he said. “(UK head coach John Calipari) is pushing us a lot. We’re all tired, we just have to fight it out.”

The team made it clear it isn’t focusing on winning the conference tournament though.

“It’s about a seed for the (NCAA) tournament,” junior DeAndrea Liggins said. “We’re playing to win, but anything can happen. We’re just trying to play for a seed.”

Liggins said it is a mentality the team’s coach has instilled in the players. Calipari seemed to place even less emphasis on the importance of winning the SEC tournament.

“If it helps us get a better seed, then let’s go for it,” Calipari said. “I just want my team playing well. I’d tell you we’d like to win it, but it’s for seed more than anything else.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — With 3:09 remaining in the Southeastern Conference tournament championship, the Tennessee Lady Vols walked onto the floor waving their arms, beckoning their fans to get louder. But they didn’t need to; their team was already winning by 25.

A blistering 76.2 three-point percentage (16-for-21) from the Lady Vols told the story of the game; but when they weren’t sinking them from deep, UK wasn’t hitting many shots of its own. It finished 21-for-77 from the field (27.3 percent).

“I didn’t give the team much help today with our gameplan,” UK head coach Matthew Mitchell said. “I put them in some bad positions … a lot of that is on me.”

The Cats held tight with Tennessee throughout out most of the first half, even cutting the lead to one point inside the three-minute mark.

“The game of basketball is full of runs, you can’t focus on that,” senior Victoria Dunlap said. “We just had to focus on the things we can control … and moving forward from that.”

Behind by only nine at halftime and playing up to form, UK hung its conference final hopes on 20 minutes of play that weren’t kind to the team.

And though the Lady Vols only scored on consecutive possessions a couple of times in the second half, UK fell behind even further, losing on a 90-65 score. Tennessee captured its 15th conference tournament championship with the win over the Cats.

Dunlap totaled 15 points in the loss, along with nine rebounds, one shy of snagging her ninth double-double this season.

“We came out strong as a team in the first half,” Dunlap said. “In the second half, we weren’t playing Kentucky basketball, and UT took advantage of that. With a team like that, you can’t give up little things, especially in transition.”

Tennessee junior Shekinna Stricklen ravaged the Cats, scoring 19 points on 7-for-8 from the field, including 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. But it was senior Angie Bjorklund who led all scorers with 23 points and dropping in seven threes.

Dunlap was selected to the All-Tournament team for the second consecutive season. Alongside her is Stricklen, who was named SEC tournament MVP, fellow Lady Vols Bjorklund and Glory Johnson, and Vanderbilt sophomore Tiffany Clarke.

Season concluded, No. 16 UK now awaits an expected at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, which begins on March 19.

“We have had some tough times this year, some very deflating losses,” Mitchell said. “But each time, this group has been able to bounce back … This is another chance for us to bounce back and show the great character these kids have.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The third time was a charm for the UK women’s basketball team when it faced Vanderbilt this season. Then again, so were the first two times.

The Cats clobbered the Commodores 69-56 in the semifinals of the Southeastern Conference tournament, a game that was only close a handful of times, to advance to the tournament championship.

Vanderbilt scored the first two pints of the game, and then it had a 22-0 UK run thrown in its face. It was a lead the Cats never gave up.

Unlike Friday’s poor start against Louisiana State, UK came out with the mindset to play “Kentucky ball,” a tough, physical defense, senior Victoria Dunlap said.

“Our players turned in unbelievable defense today against a really good Vanderbilt team,” head coach Matthew Mitchell said. “To be in the finals for the second year in a row and to be right where we intended, I am really proud of that.”

The ‘Dores turned the ball over 25 times, most of which came in the first half during UK’s big run. The team believes its full-court pressure has been effective against Vanderbilt this season, as it forced the team to commit 69 turnovers in just three meetings with UK.

“That’s our gameplan; to come in with a lot of pressure, a lot of intensity,” Dunlap said. “We were expecting that. Last time we played Vandy, we had the same mentality and the same effort on the court.”

Dunlap, who had 21 points and seven rebounds Friday, finished with a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds against Vanderbilt. It was her eighth double-double of the season.

“Now we’re in the place we expected to be,” she said.

But Mitchell credited much of his team’s success to a career-high 18 rebounds from sophomore Brittany Henderson.

“We knew it was going to be aggressive,” Henderson said. “(Senior Hannah) Tuomi and (sophomore Tiffany) Clarke are great physical players. We knew it was going to be tough on the boards today.”

UK will face the Lady Vols of Tennessee Sunday at 4:30 CT, a repeat championship game from last season. In fact, UK had only advanced to the conference championship once before that, when it played the Vols in 1982. UK lost both games by final scores of 70-62 and 80-74, respectively.

“We need to focus in our fundamentals, what our principles are,” Mitchell said. “It’s going to be a very, very simple gameplan tomorrow.”

Though the Cats have been the fan-favorites for their first two games in the SEC tournament, they will be far from that Sunday. They will try to complete a three-round fight of a different kind against UT, one that hasn’t been so kind as this season’s romping of Vanderbilt.
