UK dropped a tight match in the semifinals of the Conference-USA tournament Friday night, falling to Florida International 1-0.

The first half was sloppily played by both sides. There were five fouls, three from FIU, but only two ended in yellow cards.

The biggest foul came in the 20th minute when UK’s Jordan Wilson made a tackle in the box resulting in an FIU penalty kick.

First team All-Conference goalie Callum Irving stepped up big for the Cats, stopping the PK by FIU’s Daniel Gonzalez. But off the rebound Gonzalez sunk the ball in the back of the net to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead, a lead which they would not relinquish.

In the 58th minute, the Cats’ deficit became more difficult to overcome when Tanner Hummel drew a red card.

However, the Cats would not go down without a fight, drawing five corners in the second half. UK was unable to come up with any answer in the final minutes of play, and suffered an upset loss to an FIU team who they beat 1-0 on Nov. 7

The Cats will now be looking rebound from this upset with an invite to the 2015 NCAA Men’s College Cup. The first round of the NCAA Men’s tournament begins Nov. 19 and the selection of teams will be at 1 p.m. on Nov. 16.
