For UK’s first football game of the season, a sea of blue and white clad students gathered at “the bowl” and held up the flag of a true Kentucky tailgate: a blue solo cup.

The revisions to UK’s alcohol policy went into effect June 19, but Saturday’s tailgate parties at Commonwealth Stadium marked the first time thousands of people exercised the new freedom at a major UK sporting event.

Many students and UK organizations applauded the changes to UK’s alcohol policy, which now allows students to drink in designated areas of campus during university-approved events.

With that said, some students questioned whether there would be any difference in the efficacy of university authorities cracking down on policy violators.

As a “moist” campus, people may drink alcohol on university property as long as it is in accordance with university regulations and public policies of the state, and, if they are at a university event, the organization or student group must receive permission from the Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration.

As the festivities reached their crescendo in the blazing hot parking lots of Commonwealth Stadium and around “the bowl,” proud students and UK fans alike raised a glass and their pennant flags in support of the newly amended policy.
