Gatton gives UK $20 million toward new student center

UK trustee Carol Martin “Bill” Gatton gave the university a $20 million commitment to go toward the construction of a new Student Center beginning June 2015, university president Eli Capilouto announced Thursday. His contribution to the $175 million project constituted the largest gift in the university’s history.

The new Student Center was authorized during the Kentucky legislature’s 2014 session. It is scheduled to be completed in 2017 and will be located at the corner of South Limestone and Avenue of Champions. The current Student Center building, constructed in 1938, will be retained.

Gatton’s previous $14 million gift to the university’s college of business and economics was the largest in university history for 19 years. The college was later named in his honor.
