UK HealthCare plans $30 million expansion of UK Chandler Hospital

UK HealthCare announced on Monday plans to complete a $30-million expansion of UK Chandler Hospital.
The proposed expansion, which will go before the UK Board of Trustees for approval on Tuesday, includes the addition of 64 beds — 24 of which will be intensive care unit beds for UK HealthCare’s cardiovascular program.
Heart transplantation, ventricular devices and artificial hearts are among the treatments offered by the cardiovascular program.
Dr. Michael Karpf, UK’s executive vice president for health affairs, said in a press release that the 24 ICU beds are much needed.
“We are in critical need of more beds for our growing cardiovascular program,” Karpf said in the press release. “We continue to attract a growing number of complex patients who need our patient care services.”
The $30-million project is set to occupy the eighth floor of Pavilion A, where multiple floors have been unoccupied since it opened in 2010.
Pavilion A will have “512 state-of-the-art private patient rooms” once all 12 floors of the 1.2 million-square-foot pavilion have been fitted, according to UK HealthCare.
