UK police have found a missing child safe and well on the university campus.
Alouette Day-Moreno-Baltierra, 17 months, was reported missing from her Los Angeles home on Oct. 15.
Campus police recieved a phone call Thursday evening notifying them of a woman behaving suspiciously on university grounds, WKYT reports.
Upon responding to the call, Day-Moreno-Baltierra was discovered with the woman, who claimed to be the child’s grandmother.
“This is an example of where the responding officers followed a gut feeling that something just wasn’t right with the situation,” said UK Police Chief Joe Monroe in a UK news press release.
“We have been in working with the Child Protective Services, LAPD and the FBI to make sure that we get Alouette returned safely to her legal custodian,” Monroe said.
The woman has been identified as Maria Baltierra-Dejesus, according to the release. UK police have charged the New York resident with “endangering the welfare of a minor and custodial interference.”
A missing persons report filed by the Los Angeles Police Department in October stated that the young girl “may be in the company of her grandmother.”
Day-Moreno-Baltierra is in the care of Kentucky Child Protective Services with plans in place to reunite her with family in California.
