Michael Gilchrist is now Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, according to his Twitter. It’s a name change to honor his father, Michael Gilchrist Sr., and his uncle, Darrin Kidd. Both family members are deceased.
Gilchrist honored the memory of his father, Michael Gilchrist, Sr., who died in 1996, by the date of his college choice. Gilchrist announced his decision to attend UK on April 14, the day his father would have turned 44 years old.
Kidd, Gilchrist’s uncle, died on the day Gilchrist was ready to sign his Letter of Intent. Gilchrist attempted CPR on his uncle that day, and later went ahead with his signing in his uncle’s honor.
Now, Gilchrist is honoring both of them with his new name. And yes, it will read Kidd-Gilchrist on the back of his jersey.
