John Calipari left his session with the media Thursday with what UK fans might call a cliffhanger, and even that may be understated.

A reporter asked if freshman Enes Kanter was allowed to practice.

“He may be,” Calipari said. “He’s lifting but I don’t know if he’s in there. We will see. All right guys, got to go.”

Calipari, while he was walking away, was asked again about Kanter’s status.

“Umm, I don’t know,” Calipari said. “Let me go in here and find out.”

UK spokesman DeWayne Peevy said that it was not “unusual” for Kanter to be in practice gear, as Kanter regularly lifts weights as the team is practicing. He said he was not aware of a change in the situation regarding Kanter’s status. He said he would notify the media if Kanter was cleared to practice today.

Calipari said there was a “chance” that UK could be hearing about his status soon.

Calipari said Kanter would not be playing Friday against East Tennessee State in UK’s first game.
