Sunday football teleconference coverage

Junior wide receiver Randall Cobb, one of the most passionate and vocal Cats, took to Twitter on Sunday to let fans know how he felt after UK’s win over No. 10 South Carolina.

Over the course of several tweets, Cobb delivered the following message:

To all the fans: loved seein Yall come late, love hearing Yall tell us we suck during the game, love that we have to play against our own fans too! Love that we can’t pack the house when we play the #10 team in the nation. It means that much more to me. I love my team! Brotherhood they got my back n I got they back. The rest of Yall can get ready for bball season! Don’t say u support n do all those things! Yeah I’m level 9 pissed… so deal w it! Not blaming all but Yall know who I’m talking abt- Yall know I love #bbn but something needed to be said.

Later, Cobb deleted those tweets from his account, twitter.com/rcobb18. In their place is the following tweet:

To all the fans that has been true to this program throughout the years. Yall deserved a win like that last night! Let’s keep it going!

On his Sunday teleconference, UK head coach Joker Phillips said he heard about Cobb’s comments. He said Cobb’s youth and zeal for his team probably led to his outburst.

“Everybody understands how passionate of a player he is about this game, how passionate he is about his teammates and how passionate he is about the University of Kentucky’s football program,” Phillips said. “He’s a 19, 20-year-old kid that doesn’t always know how to deal with how people react. Me, I’m 47 years old, and I’m just now figuring out how to react to those things also.”

Phillips has said previously that he has considered banning his players from Twitter, but he has decided not to because he wants his players to be able to express themselves. He said he will continue to consider a ban.

Phillips pointed out that Cobb’s passion for the game and his teammates is one of the biggest reasons for his success, but that same passion can lead him to be irrational.

“They sometimes will say things they regret,” Phillips said. “He’s passionate about everything he does and sometimes he doesn’t understand everything that people do.”
