K2 week welcomes back students

Despite ice and snow, new and returning students can feel a warm welcome as they return to campus for the Spring semester.

K2 kicked off Jan. 10 to host events for students as they adjust to campus life. K2 is the spring version of K Week, the welcome-back celebration held in the fall. Jared Tippets, director for the Office of New Student and Parent Programs, said his office created K2 three years ago to ensure all students received a proper welcome to UK.

“Our office wanted to make sure that students who start at UK in the spring have their needs met like those students who start in the fall semester,” Tippets said. “It is also a chance for returning students to explore different opportunities on campus. We hope these events will give people an excuse to get out of their dorms and apartments despite the winter weather.”

K2 is a scaled-back version of K Week, Tippets said, and weather and budget limitations play a part in the planned activities. Events include free movies, open houses, concerts, socials and comedy groups. The schedule runs through Jan. 22.

Since different offices, departments and student groups on campus offer events at K2, Tippets said a variety of activities are planned to entertain students. Tippets said if students can bear the chilly weather to get to a K2 event, he believes they will find the experience worth it.

“During these events we hope students have fun, meet new friends, learn their way around campus, get their questions answered, and find out all that campus has to offer academically and socially,” Tippets said.

Tippets said the schedule of events is updated almost daily. A complete list can be found at www.uky.edu/K2.
