Leading up to the Nov. 19 tobacco ban, the main reason given for how the change will be implemented was creating a culture of compliance. With the ban in effect for nearly a month, the plan is seemingly working according to early results.
As of Friday, no student or faculty member had been reported to the Dean of Students or Human Resources for violating the policy, said Gail Hairston, university spokeswoman.
In weeks leading up to the ban, students had said they would simply walk across campus to get their nicotine fix. However, several managers of businesses nearby campus have said they have not noticed an increase in people smoking outside their facilities.
David Wade, manager of Wildcats Textbooks, located at 563 S. Limestone, said he has not seen an increase or change in the amount of people that loiter outside his business.
Gordon Bentley, manager of Phillips Market, located at 553 S. Limestone, said he has not noticed a particular increase in loitering either.
“I can’t tell if that’s made an increase, I know a lot of people that do smoke that don’t particularly care about the ruling,” he said.
Of course no violations have been reported… No student wants to confront their peers on such a matter. Driving down Rose Street, I see various individuals casually smoking cigarettes. Ranging from UK maintainance staff, to students and visitors; they don’t care that they are in violation of the new ordinance because everybody knows there have not been any real notions of consequence, much less enforcement. Maybe the University should consider not creating such empty regulations before trying to be more overbearing on the population. I mean really, how
much did all of those Tobacco Free Campus signs cost?
This is absurd. If we were to stop enforcing all of laws ever created we could turn around and say “looks like there’s no crime anymore since we adopted the new no-enforcement policies!”
” The next thing you know they’ll be trying to arrest drug dealers around here. “
Wow, what a joke! Ms. Perkowski, I suggest you dig a little deeper into this matter and discover WHY no violations have been reported.
Great example of a misleading headline- you make it sound as if no violations occur, when in reality the ban is- as expected- a total joke
See now that the rule has passed nobody cares, no violations and we are back to where we were in October with the exception of money spent on signs. All those that thought the Nazi’s were taking over you blew your hot steam for nothing…
There were police at the event protesting the ridiculous outdoor smoking ban. They said they had no intention of enforcing the ridiculous ban. It’s almost like they have real crimes to worry about.
When laws/rules are created but not equitably enforced, you create a system where those who speak out can be singled out with selective enforcement.
What a joke! No one knows exactly how to report any so-called violations. Who is supposed to do the reporting? This ridiculous new ordinance has not stopped people from smoking. On the contrary, it seems smokers have simply found better hiding places to smoke. Just watch out for our fan intakes, please, people! ;-)
